Work Smarter, Garden Longer: Ergonomics for Gardeners

Course Description: Whether you are tending a lush herb garden or maintaining a perennial landscape, your physical well-being is the most important tool you own. This course is designed to help gardeners of all skill levels enjoy their hobby with less pain and greater longevity by applying the principles of ergonomics to the backyard.

Through a blend of practical demonstrations and evidence-based techniques, we will explore how to work with your body rather than against it. Participants will learn how to identify common strain patterns and implement modifications that make gardening more accessible and sustainable. This class is ideal for anyone looking to reduce the "day-after" aches and pains of gardening, as well as those navigating physical limitations who want to continue their passion for planting safely and comfortably.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand Ergonomics: Define what ergonomics means in a residential gardening context and why it matters for long-term joint and muscle health.
  • Master Body Mechanics: Learn the "proper" way to lift, bend, reach, and kneel to minimize the risk of repetitive strain injuries.
  • Adapt Your Environment: Explore gardening modifications-such as vertical planting and raised beds-that bring the work to you.
  • Select & Maintain Tools: Identify the features of true "ergonomic" tools and learn how proper maintenance (like sharpening) reduces physical effort.
  • Prioritize Safety: Review essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against environmental hazards and skin irritation.
  • Implement Best Practices: Develop a personalized routine for stretching, pacing, and hydration to keep you in the garden longer.
